Firefly launches jet ops with flights to Penang, Kota Kinabalu

KUALA LUMPUR (July 23): Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group, announced the launch of its jet operations at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang, with flights to Penang and to Kota Kinabalu.

Ticket sales began on Monday, Firefly said in a statement. The routes will be served with Firefly’s retrofitted Boeing 737-800 aircraft, equipped with 189 seats in economy class featuring a personal device holder, and USB type A and C power outlets.

“Firefly's introduction of jet operations from Subang represents a strategic enhancement of our network,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, the group managing director of Malaysia Aviation Group. “We want to reassure passengers that our current ATR72 schedules will remain unaffected.”

Firefly is now offering promotional, all-in one-way fares from Subang to Penang (PEN) at RM129, and from Subang to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) at RM249, for travel between Aug 29, 2024 and Aug 6, 2025. The fares include 10kg of check-in baggage, 7kg of carry-on baggage, and free refreshments on board.

The jet operations will complement the existing nine times daily to Penang served by the ATR72, bringing the total number of flights between Penang and the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport to 10 daily.

“This initiative highlights MAG’s commitment to expanding travel options and strengthening connectivity across our network,” Izham added.

Initially offering only turbo propeller flights, Firefly now operates over 2,100 weekly flights to eight destinations available with both turbo propeller and jet engine airplanes.

Firefly has been flying from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang since 2008, and also has scheduled operations to Singapore’s Seletar Airport (XSP) as an alternative to the Changi Airport (SIN).
