AirAsia Hosts Asean Pilots’ League Football Tournament

Airline pilots from the Asean region recently converged in Kuala Lumpur for the annual Asean Pilots’ League’s (APL) seven a-side football tournament at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara. This year’s tournament is organized by AirAsia and saw ten teams from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam compete from 8 to 9 November 2012.

For this edition of the tournament, AirAsia fielded two teams. A great achievement as just a couple of years ago, the airline could not even form a team as it did not have enough players.

Apart from AirAsia’s teams, there will also be two teams are from Malaysia Airlines, two teams from the Thailand Pilot Association, two teams from Airline Pilots Association Singapore, a team from Asosiasi Pilot Garuda and one team from Vietnam Airlines.

The tournament’s final match saw the Thai Pilot Association team and Vietnam Airlines team battling it out. However the match was halted due to torrential rain. In the end, both team agreed to become co-champions and shared the Championship Cup.

The APL was established to serve as a forum for members to articulate their views as well as to maintain a direct link with the International Federation of Airline Pilots’ Association (IFALPA). On top of that, APL also promotes camaraderie amongst its members through various activities including the seven a-side football tournament.

The seven a-side football tournament is an annual tournament and last year the event was hosted by Vietnam Airlines.
